*= ? what does this mean

Does anyone know what *= means in sql...never seen it before and can't figure it out...thanks
 
Specifically a LEFT OUTER JOIN but note that this way of specifying a join can give incorrect results in some situations.
 
By all means replace this with a correct outer join. YOu dod not want to mess with this sysntax as sometimes it will do a cross join instead of an outer join. It is very prone to incorrect results.
