Windows 7 is so much fun. After my partner joined his new laptop to our home network, I am now getting entries like this in Event Viewer:

The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer ASUSN61 that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{0501ABA4-650A-4495-B0BE-BFB3A1D333A9}. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

The funny thing is, the "source" on the event log is listed as "bowser" (no typo!)

On top of that, Windows Explorer tanked on me for no apparent reason.

Application 'C:\Windows\explorer.exe' (pid 3780) cannot be restarted - Application SID does not match Conductor SID..

Should I just toss this 64bit system out the window and go back to something that works, like XP?

I've really reached my limit on this.

Many thanks in advance.

What is providing your DHCP / DNS?

The pc is acting like the master controller for your network, this is standard since at least NT4 where the newer (and higher version) "server" tries to become the master controller for the network.
This can happen for a load of reasons.
1st up, check all your network settings on the pc's are the same (Ip address range, subnet mask, default gateway).

Also found this on another site.

Robert Wilensky:
We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true.

It is the WINS name resolution service, the way that NetBIOS over TCP/IP checks which computers are connected within a workgroup, if there is no domain controller to handle the database of attached computers, every one broadcasts a packet, which says something like
"I am Spartacus!", until one of them says "There can be only one!", and the Master Browser is elected.

"bowser", because the Microsoft networking programmers found that "browser" caused a conflict in naming of variables in their program. Bowser (King Koopa)is a villain in the Super Mario Bros game.

As far as SID is concerned, he sounds like a bug. Explorer has partially shut down and wants to reopen, but there is a part of the old instance remaining.

You can possibly shut down the rest of explorer (application or process) with task manager, and report the glitch to Microsoft - if they don't know about it they can't investigate or fix it.

That was hillarious flyboytim!

Squaguy, you could also try disabling Netbios or try the "use the DHCP server's settings" setting for NetBIOS. Right click the icon in taskbar, select Open Network and Sharing Center" then select "Change Adapter Settings" and right click the connection you're using. Select "Properties" and from there, it looks pretty much like Windows XP.

You don't need to disable it on both PCs. Just try one and see what the result is. It may not be too drastic. And it may be a workaround until you get a hotfix from MS.

I have read this thread 3 times now, and I'm trying to figure out where the HECK that came from!

Just my 2¢

Well, according to Larry Osterman - who wrote the bowser component for NT3.1 (yes, it's that old) it was so named, and thus not a typo, because it messed up the debugger to have two components with the same name
