what does the /var/logs/wtmp file do

The file /var/logs/wtmp is grwoing quite rapidly. Is there a way I can zip/compress/or move this file?

Hi,
the file has the login history for all users. Type 'last' to read the file.

You can just zero it if you don't need it. Do '>wtmp'.
