Taskmon.exe is always running in the background. Is there a valid reason for this, especially if I use Norton SpeedDisk to "defrag" the HD from time to time? In fact, with fast "seek" times, is de-fragging a good idea? Thanks for all suggestions.

Taskmon keeps a running tab on all the applications you use between defrags. When you run defrag, it looks at taskmon to see what you use the most, and (theoretically) places those applications at the start of the hard drive.
Turn the thing off in msconfig, you don't need it, especially if you're using SpeedDisk.
