what does "directory checksum error" mean ?

I try to read a diskette on my sunstation by using tar tvf /dev/diskette and i get that error. I'm running 2.6.1 can someone give me some HELP PLEASE. I'm very new to this field.

The error is that you are trying to open a directory using the tar command, which is used to open/create tar files.
You would normaly use the ls command to look at directory contents.

Is the diskette actually mounted?
