What does NTLDR mean at boot... and system will not boot up?

I am having problems booting up on Windows xp I get this message NTLDR missing.
 
NTLDR is a major system file found in the root directory of C drive. Can't help you other than to think of re installing XP. Hopefully some more learned person will help you.
