Hi,

I know UTP means "Unshielded Twisted pair" and STP means "Shielded Twisted Pair", but do not know what FTP or S-FTP means when it comes to Cable (CAT5e etc).

I tried google but seemed to have trouble getting the right keywords to get an answer ;)

There are really two types of STP being used today: one is based on the original IBM design, the other is called sUTP (screened UTP), scTP (sceened twisted pair), or FTP (foil twisted pair). The original STP consists of individually shielded pairs and an overall braided shield. sUTP/scTP/FTP cable is really just UTP that has an overall foil shield. While the original STP reduced crosstalk between pair, this type only protects against outside noise. Most "Category 5 STP" being sold today is of the sUTP/scTP/FTP type.

S-FTP is FTP using solid rather than stranded cable.

Very good description, well done! Your last comment about S-FTP and FTP confuses me, which cable manufacturer marks it that way? The FTP stuff I get is always solid.

It is only my opinion, based on my experience and education...I am always willing to learn, educate me!

On the S-FTP I was mistaken in my information. It can be either stranded or solid the 'S' stands for screened. So where FTP will have the foil shield, S-FTP will have the foil shield, then a braid and then the jacket. Sorry for the mixup.
