Hi, guys

My desktop manual says that I could add an aditional internal hard drive. When I did some research online, I found two kinds of internal hard drive.

the link above shows a picture of an internal hard drive that is more "closed"

the follwing link, however, gives a picture of an internal hard drive that haS the internal parts exposed.

I am not sure which type to buy.

appreciate any input on the difference between those two.

Well since it is sealed, and better stay that way, as dust will kill it, and anything else that lands on the platters. the 2nd pic is just to show you what it looks like inside. so, you don't destroy yours opening it to see what's inside...Any internal drive you buy will look similar to the one in the first pic.

When the manual says "internal", it probably meant internal as in "inside of the PC"...that there is a bay indentical to the one that your current drive is installed in where another hard drive can be installed (Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate, etc.). Unless you're just curious as to what the inside of a hard drive looks like, there's never a real need to open one (to add to what rclarke250 said, doing so would also void any warranty that the drive may be under).

The second picture is purely for illustration purposes only.
like the type you find of automobile engines, cut in half showing the working components, YOU DON'T buy them like this.
The first picture correctly shows an desktop 3.5inch internal hard drive (this one looks like a WesternDigital the type used in typical desktop computers) but it could be any make ie Hitachi/Seagate/Maxtor/Samsung or WesternDigital.

My advice to you would be,
Armed with a print out of that first picture, turn off your pc and open your computer case. Assuming you are looking at it side on with the front of the case facing to the right, you should see (ON THE RIGHT) down the bottom a hard disk drive (HDD) (commonly called your "C" drive), then looking up from that you will see a floppy drive (called "A" drive) then up from that maybe a cd or DVD Drive (commonly called "D" drive). This is your basic group of drives. Notice the wide cable that connects to your Hard disk drive and the 4 wire power plug that goes into it as well. If you follow the wide cable from your HDD, you will see another connector on it. That is used to connect another HDD to your PC and is commonly called your slave drive and is given a drive letter by default from your PC. I hope that helps you get to know your inners a bit better. Cheers
