In the root directory I have a rather large core file. Is this serious? It indicates that the dtfile may have a problem, how do I troubleshoot this?

Thanks in advance

Core files are produced when a program acts illegally- for example, if it tries to access memory that doeasn't belong to it.

Most core dumps are simply the result of programming errors. However, it's *possible* that this is caused by more serious hardware or kernel problems. Usually a whole bunch of programs would be acting up in that case.

Hi,
If you working on linux, then you can parse through the core file and can find out the exact reason for core dump. you can use gdb which is a debugger, to debug through that core file.

ref. man page of gdb.

Mahesh
