What do you use HPOV for?

This may seem like an odd question, but i was wondering what other people have used their HPOV boxes for. We've got HPOV with an unlimited license running on a modestly powerful server, but all we really use it for is to track 10 switches and insert Remedy trouble tickets if they don't respond.

I was just looking for some other things to do with it. i'm pretty strong in Perl, so the skies the limit when it comes to actions and things like that. It just seems like such a waste to have a program as powerful as HPOV just sitting there basically pinging nodes. . .

thanks in advance for any responses or ideas

You can use it to ping things like servers and printers and also it has some SNMP capability to glean more than just interface status from the machine/printer/switch/device.

If you are only using it to ping and enter a service ticket, a product like big brother could be used instead, and it's free I think.

Alex,

I used to use the Perl module Expect to interrogate routers etc about their stats. You can grab data and do pretty much what you like with it, from pretty graphs to automatic config changes.

we used to use it to monitor our network UPSs and printers, but the printers always seemed to lose the SNMP settings if they were powered down (cheap lexmarks), and the UPSs never seemed to send us the traps we were really interested in, so eventually my admin told me to remove all the printers and UPSs from openviews filter.

we actually had a pretty nice Big Brother server, but since we had already shelled out the money for Openview, and BB4 wasn't authorized on our network, it was quietly phased out about a year or so ago. . .

have you had any luck polling Microsoft products? i tried getting info from out SQL and Exchange servers, but the numbers are usually random gibberish. . .

Most of my stuff is Solaris. We have a couple Windows machines but I haven't done much with them. What were you trying to get from the Windows machines?

I know I've messed around to get the printers to send me information and it seemed to work well. Ours are big HP lasers, though, so maybe they have more SNMP capability. I haven't tried to talk to the UPSs yet.
