I'm interested to know who the leading transaction services providers are -- Iknow that First Data Corporationis the biggest in the US -- but what do people here use and why? What are the criteria for choosing a provider?

I did a lot of research and comparison shopping and ended up with Total Merchant Services' offering of Authorize.Net. There are certainly a lot of choices, and I've not used others so my opinion is not one of a veteran. I chose TMS mostly because:

A) low startup cost (just an app fee; no other immediate expenses)
B) no leases
C) a grand total monthly minimum of $45 (including gateway, statement fees, etc)
D) they responded quickly and accurately with my e-mailed questions
E) they offer several choices including Authorize.Net (they also offer PayLink), which works well with my e-commerce package (Miva Merchant)

I will recommend WorldPay and 2CheckOut ... pretty good.
