Has anybody heard of Swish program?

I heard it is way too easy and cheaper than the Macromedia flash! Is this program worth owning or should we stick to Macromedia flash?

I've heard of it too, I thought it was just an FX tool for text and stuff, no where near the power of Flash.

Swish is okay but you do end up with effects that look pretty standard because it's been used so much by so many people. If those are the effects you want then it's a really quick way of producing them and if you're in a job where you need to churn out huge amounts of animated text then it's really productive.

If you want something unique or something which you have tight control over and can script around then you're better off making your own effects with scripting or tweens. It takes more time and effort but it's yours.

Personally I think Swish is responsible for some of the worst site intros on the net where someone has just decided to use every predefined transition one after the other. Horrible, and part of the reason Flash had such a bad reputation with "usability" gurus.

That said I've also seen it in the hands of a good designer with an eye for detail and the results were incredibly impressive :)

Like Flash, it's just a tool and your ideas are what makes the difference.

I agree with wangbar his rant is definitly a good point.

JavaScript suffers the same type of preconceived idea that it is responsible for all the annoyances of web browsing simply because it was badly used. Don't let flash be the same just because you are capable of doing something doesn't mean that you should do it. Sometimes a "cool effect" is not at all cool.

I find myself nowadays building DHTML web sites that take full advantage of JS but don't show the old things that people overdid with JS (alerts, popups, scrolling text in the status bar).

It's hard to gain a name back once the name is tainted. So use flash wether it be with swish or witht he full toolkit only when you are certain usability is not in detriment of your "cool" ideas.

That goes for everyone that likes a technology and one day wants to do a living with it. Gary Haran
