I want to connect my desktop on dsl to my wifes laptop. What will I need to do this and how and what has to be changed in the pc and laptop? The pc is running Win98SE and the laptop is running Win XP Home.

Depending on the type of service you have and your preferences there is a number of different options.

1. ICS: use one computer as the host and install two network cards . connect the second NIC to the "client" pc. and use 'internet connection sharing" which is a windows feature. this is the cheapest way to do it but may be harder to configure.

2. buy a cheap hub (about $30) connect the dsl connection and both computers to it and make sure to have the NIC's set to "obtain IP address automaticly". your provider may or may not allow for more than one IP address so contact them to make sure this is a option.

3. get a router ($50-$100) this is the best way in my opinion. just connect the dsl to the router (up link) and the connect both pc's to it. now days the routers are being made for dsl/broadband internet and are basicly ready to go when you open the box. it is easy to do and safer for internet surfing.

hear is some more info.

hope this helps!

If you get a wireless router.. such as a DWL-900AP+, you can set up a wireless PCMCIA card in the laptop and surf from the wireless router. And most of those routers come with dual antennas, so that you can do a vertical and horizontal polarization, so that you can surf from the whole house.. different floors and all.

So you'd spend about $150 for the router, and about $60 for a Wireless PCMCIA card.. and you could just plug the PC into the router with Cat5 cable.
