Good day,

We are currently running on a Meridian 1 Opt 11C. When a caller is placed on hold, all they hear is silence and this causes many of them to believe (for obvious reasons) that they have suddenly been hung up on. What do I need to do to put hold music for these people? We're not well versed in the switch itself, although I'm picking up as much as I can by reading various forums (company doesn't want to pay for formal training), but nobody seems to know what we need.

Any advice on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.

You will need an available port on a Univ Trk card and you will need a music source.

There are a lot of music sources- you could by a service from a cable company or Musac or others, you could have a recored message just for your company like from message on hold, you could have just a simple cd walkman that you could set to play continually.

Be carefull of the source or the music police will be knocking at your door.

If you change LD15 - FTR - MUS = No, at least your callers will get ringing, until you get your music source sorted

Just to give you an idea, First, build a music route in LD16. Then make your changes in LD15 - FTR - MUS = to yes. You will, then need to create a music port in LD14 and punched down the music source to this port. A simple cd player on replay will work.

Sorry, it is not very clear, But in a nutshell there you have it.

in the states the mus source can not be music that someone hold a copyright to, ie, no radio station and not your fav group. rebroadcast of those is a lic problem.

This was a pretty old posting, but now i need to pull this up;-)

Kingtero said create a music port in LD 14 and punch down the music source (a music player )..
What kind of card is needed in the system? a MIRAn will do?
and How the cable will be connectd to a music player? do we have a special NTxxx cable for that?

you need an analog trunk card, miran is not recogmended for moh since you can't connect an outside source to that. build a new route in 16, trunk type mus, and add a trunk to it.

ld 16 to build, almost all prompts are default

my card is a NT8D14BB, a newer version, of course, will work. on an 11 you just need the one, on a larger switch you need one trunk in each group. you also need to go to each route and answer mus yes, the next line will ask for the route. next in your cdb, feature date answer mus and enter the route, for internal music on hold. that gives you the option to have different music internal then external, or a different msg to callers on hold from ld or local trunks..

Sorry but that answer is not fully correct.

1. MIRAN has an inbuilt plug to connect external music devices since MIRAN I to MIRAN III. This plug is located on the upper side of the front panel (3,5 mm like for a hifi headset). Anyway if you have MIRAN already there is no really need to connect an external device, because the system it self is able to server up to eight independent music sources without having an spinning device such as a CD-Player. By the way the MIRAN is powered by the telephone exchange, an this normally has a battery backup. In case of a system down or a power outage MIRAN works as long as the switch does and the comes back up and play automatically, a normal CD Player does not.

2. For bigger systems it is not necessary to connect a music trunk in every group since the introduction of the feature music broadcast (since Rls 23.XX). All you have to do, is to order music broadcast licences for your system. The system then automatically distributes the one source across their groups.

MIRAN is the most expensive way to make MOH work but the later HW releases enables you to change or download new music from remote if you have a LAN WAN connection set up to this side.

The cheapest way is to use a NT5K72 (E&M, RAN, PAG). This card is a multi functional circuit card that enable you to connect Radio Paging Equipment, Recorded Announcement, E&M tie lines (analogue of course) and MUSic on hold sources.

I would recommend to use a non spinning device such as an simple mpeg player as a music source.

my miran must be a little older, i don't have the external jack option, thanks for the update

My MIRAN is a MIRAN I NTAG36AA (so one of the oldest), but may be they sell it without jack option in the states.

I am from the Nortel region EMEA or more precise from Europe.

could be a different version, mine only speaks english and plays country music!!!

John the jack for outide music source on the Miran III is actually a port on the amphenol. on the Option 11 remember the amphenol port is under the cards, there is an adapter now that plugs into that instead of a cable, this has the jack on it.
