i posted this in the CGI forum and they said i should post it here...

ok, I've been using text based Databases for my website, and i'm wanting to move up in the world, i was thinking MySQL.

what would be the best DB for a CGI script? and where and how would i start. any thoughts would help, i know a lot of you have been doing this for a long time, so i would like to get some experienced help. (meaning anything not from me or Google, any input would be much appreciated no matter what level)

i don't have a clue where to start. i just know i do want to expand my knowledge.

thanks, for your time.

The best DB for a website is whatever your ISP supports, which is usually MySQL. And if you're doing your own hosting, then you can't go far wrong with MySQL; it's mature and reliable and works on multiple platforms. It's also relatively small and fast, but supports databases of almost any size. And it's free.

A good start would be to download MySQL from and start playing with it. And you could also get a good MySQL book, and/or print the manual, and/or check out the online tutorials.
