What if i was going to create a database to hold 8 million records, with about ten fields each. A front end would be created for this database with about 25 users. What database software would best fit this use?
thank you very much all is helpfull. I'm not sure that mysql would be able to handle that many records with the speed im looking for, but other than that i am a big fan of mysql. I'm working on a project right now, and it's kind of a sisuation where were oftered out side assitance but the company wants me to find out if we can create something in house for less. We already have to spend $25,000 as it stands but im not sure what the limit would be. I would image another $25000 would probley be the limit but dont know at this point. The cheaper i could go the better i would look. but the performace has to be there.
Any thing else any body can add?
I can't see MySQL having a problem with that sort of size! From what I have been told, it's pretty good at handling large databases and is reckoned to be one of the fastest dbms out there.
Don't be put off by the open sourceness of MySQL, it's serious stuff!

You may use Oracle SE. Its price is quite reasonable and it provides all main Oracle features. Then if your application will need higher capacity you may easily migrate to EE.
contains over 17 translations of the Bible and the searches are still lightning fast. Last time I checked they told me they use MySQL.
But is there any GUI interface for MySQL, similar to MSSQL Server or Access? The ones I've tried out seem to be inferior and that's my biggest holdup when it comes to using MySQL.
