What could have allowed this??

I just came back from a client whos fax line went dead after I "thought I corrected a problem. I install a digital set off of a available port and id the phone as ex 4301. made desi's and emailed the client the new extension. He says Hey 4301 is my Fax line. I go back and renumber the extension to an adjunct then find an available DID. The next day his fax line is not working.

1. How can the system give a analog number an extension and then allow for me to give a digital set the same number?

Im worried there could be a processor problem as some phones are going out and coming back on on its own or after me just unpluging it from the jack and plugging it back in.

A number of things come to mind: flaky power supply, loose module or back plane, bad power source, intermittent connections, etc. The first thing I would do is check for any error alarms on the switch. If you are not fluent in understanding this sort of stuff, post a print of the errors, and someone will provide feedback and/or suggestions for you.

Thanks Jim, there are no errors on the switch but you may have a valid point with th eback plane or loos module as the problem happens when techs are punchining down cross connect as the MDF shares the same wall.
