I have a question about the timeout function. When you set the variable in /etc/profile to say 10 minutes. If I start a mirrorvg and leave it running in the foreground and it takes over 30 minutes to complete. Will the timeout variable be satisfied and my seesion ended if I wait for the mirrorvg to complete?

I would also like to know if anyone knows where I can read about the timeout variable and how it works. Is there any documentation that I can read from IBM or another source.

Thanks.

It only times out if no process is connected to the terminal.

It should be documented in the man page for the shell you're using.

Cheers

Hi,
If you have some heavy commands to run and you don't want them to be depending on your terminal connection, you can use nohup (no hang up) command to run them this way:

#nohup mirrorvg your_params &
Sending output to nohup.out ( type RETURN to get prompted )
#
#exit

Even when you exit and turn off your terminal, mirrorvg is still running with stdout ans stderr redirected to the file named "nohup.out" in the current directory
