One of my compaq notebook,s harddrives (d, system_sav)is telling me that it is full, I am sure that I have a lot of programs on it that I don't need, never use, but I don't know what most of them do, how they are interrelated and therefore what I can and cannot remove.

I have not ever knowingly put anything in my D drive.

Any ideas? For example huge amounts of space are taken up with things like Cpqdrv,Cpqs, Data. What are they and are they necissary, are they interconnected so that if I were to delete some parts of them would it cause problems elsewhere?

Even drive C has Compaq files, such as CPQInet, Dostpad, Hw, Ie5,Internet, isp, lutil, oobe, webisp, WebRig.

And another Cpqdrv and Cpqs

Start with Add/Remove Programs and delete Compaq S/W you recognize and know you don't need. The CPQDRV folder has all the Compaq drivers you need incase you neede to reload something hardware related. It sounds like a Presario and I'm not sure about all those other folders.
