I am getting wireless internet and would like to setup a vpn connection with my main office and would like to know what router I should use. My main office has wireless internet also and I need a router for that location too. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What kind of connection will you use?
This can make a big differenc i what router you need.

Do you want the router to supply the VPN connections?
What kind of speed do you need.

It is wireless internet. The connection will be ethernet. The speed at the outside locations will be 128K and the main office will be 512K but I am not sure yet. What I want to do is have the outside locations have a constant connection to the main office via their internet connection by using VPN. I want the router to do the vpn. The outside locations will be running terminal server sessions and need VPN to map back drives and printers because they are using a dos application.

What firewall are you using at the main office?
If you can use a firewall from the same vendor.
If you eg. use Symantec Enterprise Firewall (Raptor) at the main office use the same at your location.

Connecting VPN from different vendors sometimes gives you a lot of problems.

If you don't have any firewalls at all, I would look at SonicWall. They are good and don't cost too much.

In our company we use both Symantec Enterprise Firewall and SonicWall.
On the internet connection the SonicWall is the first one and the Symantec second (all VPN is from Symantec to Symantec)
Home Offices on ADSL will have a SonicWall and Raptor Mobile on the client. Again VPN from Symantec to Symantec.

I don't have anything in place right now. I am just seeing what I would need. I am open to any suggestions. I just need a constant connection from remote location with wireless internet to main location wireless internet. I heard there are routers out there that you can connect across the internet together to create a vpn so that I can share data from one location to another without long distance rates. I just need to know what kind of router whether it be sonic wall or cisco that I can use that will allow me to do this. Thanks for your time.

The router you should buy depends on the interface the connection is using.
You can get routers that also support some kind of VPN and firewall, but I like to use routers for routing and firewalls for the firewall stuff.

Maintaining a firewall is never easy, but the SonicWall has a nice interface that is easy to use.

The FWA connection we have at work is terminated as a E1, but I have also seen terminations based on ATM.

I like the Cisco 1700 and 2600 routers, but there is a lot of others you can use.
