What causes 2008 R2 to require reactivation?

I have some virtual servers with 2008 R2 VMs on them. When I try to clone them, they require reactivation - is this normal?

I am assuming it is sensing a hardware change, what could it be?

I am NOT trying to clone illegal copies of Windows 2008 R2, these are all legal copies. If I have to activate every close, so be it - I was just wondering what is causing it.

Thanks,
Andrew

Sounds like it would be the hardware change. At the very least the MAC address is changing, but depending on the virtualization solution that you are using and the cloning method, it could be seeing more than that. Also, if you are cloning from a sysprepped template you would expect to have to reactive.

As kmcferrin says it is due to the hardware changing.

Actually we're using Citrix XenServer. I was thinking it may be the mac address....that's the only thing I can think of that changes.

Thanks,
Andrew

It's not a move, it's a clone. And depending on how it's cloned the hardware can change, triggering a reactivation.
