what are these files for in /tmp?

AIX version ?

I don't have them on 4.3.3 - maybe the result of some command (that I haven't run :) )

They're files used by mksysb or, more accurately by mkszfile. They map the file systems to the hard drives. man mkszfile for details

Yep... columb hit it on the head.

Did you "kill" a mksysb process or have a mksysb running when you saw those files? skulker should take care of them after 24 hrs.
