What are the ".axis" files of a dimension?

I create several dimensions. One of then (Projects) has more than 1 million of members. All dimensions have a .dimcr (dimension custton rollup) file, a .dimprop (dimension properties) file, a dimtree (dimension members) file and a .dim (dimension metadata) file. But the huge dimension Projects has another files with a axis extension. Why that? What are these files? Why doen´t he other dimension have these files?
