Hi

What are the advantages of an extra CE processor licence? Is it a simple fact such as two processor licences provides double the processing power, thus if a report takes an hour ro run, it will now take half that time (in layman's terms)? And does it provide a more secure environment, i.e. if the one server goes down, the other one takes over all the load, so as far as the user is concerned (except for a performanxce issue), he/ she will notice nothing (no down time)?

I need to present the way forward to the BI board, and will want these reasons set out clearly to them. I have searched the BOBJ website, but no luck.

Thanks,

A processor license means that you can install the software onto a central machine (1 processor) i.e your server and then have other machines accessing this server to use CE, CR.

The other type of license that you have is named license where you name the machines/user who will use the software and I believe there is also a concurent license whereby you can only have x amount of users accessing the software at the same time.

If you buy an extra processor license it won't half the speed of the reports being run its all to do with the licensing of the software.

If you have a dual processor server then I believe that there are some implications if you only have 1 processor license.

It might be worth getting in touch with BOBJ for some more info, and i'm sure there is someone on the forum which will be able to give you more detailed info.

Hi,
With 2 Processor licenses, you can set up a clustered environment for fail-over and/or load balancing..

Install a full set of CE services on 2 similar machines in the same subnet, have them share a database for the CMS ( see the docs on Clustering/expanding)..

I second Turk's statements.

Adding that every shop which considers business intelligence a critical aspect of their business should be providing for failover/backup and load balancing.

And those that do not consider business intelligence important are probably destined to be out of business.

Hi,
In addition to the clustering we also have our Input and Output FRS directories on a separate File server which is backed-up and imaged to a second location each night ( we do not run 24/7 so no activity is taking place) ( 2 backups actually, one to a network location and 1 ( just the input set) to a removable Zip disk..)

So, in our setup, we have
2 web servers for user access and asp pages..
2 Crystal servers ( clustered, using an Oracle database on our main production Oracle server ) and
a separate File server for the FRS location.

Might be a little over-cautious, but we can, at least in theory, be back up with no loss of function within an hour of total failure..
