Sorry for the newbie question, but what exactly are FSMO roles and what does it stand for?

Flexible Single Master of Operations

Most of them are features that MS added to prevent changes on an object at more that one DC from conflicting, so each server is in charge of a particular role.

Forest level.

Schema Master, Maintains the only master copy of the schema in the entire forest.

Domain Naming Master, Ensures that all domain names are unique.

Domain Level

RID Master, Assigns pools of RID (relative identifiers) to domain controllers.

PDC Emulator, Provides PDC functionality to down-level BDCs while running in mixed mode.

Infrastructure Master, Maintains object consistency throughout the domain and in remote domains. If a group or user name is changed, its responsibility is to perform the changes locally in the domain, and replicate updated changes to all other replicas.

I've understated the role of the PDC emulator there, it's main function is downlevel compatibility but it is also the DC that is consulted before any other DC returns an "Incorect password" error. This is because password changes are replicated to this DC first.

With Windows 2000 'Multiple Master' replaced the PDC / BDC concept. However there are 5 jobs that still must be performed only one one server. Since you can choose which servers hold which roles, it was deemed Flexible. Hence Flexible, Single Master Operation.
