What are backup and restore history tables? SQL 2000

Hi

What are they and where are they - can they be purged or are they like transaction logs that are cleared down on a backup or something?

After some more googling I foung that this should be done regularly -

Can anyone tell me whats the worst that can happen running sp_delete_backuphistory - is this just a log? What would happen if I did a backup now and purged all previous records in the history?
