(This meessage was posted in Postfix forum but no replies)

I have recently set up a RedHat postfix box with qpopper, pop-before-smtp, and about 30 active mailboxes. It works great!! However I am getting large amounts of entries in the log file which are not errors or warnings. i am not at the box now so i cant paste some examples. They seem like normal entries but there are so many!! there are about 35-40 entries PER SECOND!!! They say things like "Timing for ann..." etc, etc, etc. It is not a problem but there are probably almost 100,000 lines in the most recent maillog file...what would happen if i had 1000 users?!?!?!?

thanks in advance

Hi,

If possible can you paste the actual message. Easy for us to give you more information.

these lines have been filling up the maillog file exponentialy while adding more user. My most recent maillog file is MEGA-bytes long. They seem like normal entries but i am just worried about the impact to the server and need to know what exactly they are.

Hi,

It just an information when client connect to your mail server and your mail server handle any smtp request. Nothing to worry about. If you worrid about your log file too big, then I suggest you rotate your log file. Log file is good for debugging so keep it.

why does "Timing forbeeson@ip68-100-22" and other lines appear once every minute all day? I know they are not logging in once a minute.

thanks

Hi,

It must be your pop service information regarding that user. Can you paste the the full line, please? I wonder if that user has setup mail client to check email every minute or so. Can you check, please?

feroz
