what´s the difference between rpms i386 and i686??

hi i am new at linux, and i need to install the patches of the redhat 9 server,, so my first question, is where i can find the patches?? and the second,, what´s the difference between i386 and i686 patches, how i know what do i need to install??

Start here:

If you are running an i686 box, you should install those instead of the i386 .rpms, they are compiled with optimizations for your architecture.

The i386 can use for intel 386 processor until pentium 4 processor.
And the i686 only use for intel pentium 4 processor.
