Hello,

I´m working on Oracle 8.i Datawarehouse environment and I´m about to decide which solution is better:
1) Construct my OLAP cubes on Microsft Analysis Services
OR
2) Construct my OLAP cubes using Oracle materialized views.

Can anyone help me out with some tips ?

Best Regards,
Jorge

I would use materialized views to build the source of data (instead of original tables/queries/views) for cubes in Analisys Services. Stick to your guns

Materialized views behave the same as aggregate tables. Be sure that your BI Tool is aggregate aware to have full advantage of this feature.

There is no need for BI tool to be aware of the Materialized View. Oracle is smart enough to rewrite query to use the materalized views.
One more advantage of implementing DM using relational technology rather than proprietary OLAP is the universal access. Anu BI tool can talk with it using SQL and does not require adpaters like OLAP.

I choose Oracle MV too. In general there's no need to let the tool aware of the MV. Oracle should be smart enough to rewrite the SQL. If you schema is too complicated and Oracle is confused, you may need a tool that's MV aware or aggregate aware.

You can't pair the ease of drill down/drill trough given by olap with straight Oracle.
You'll never get the advantages of MOLAP cubes in a relational db.
That's why I would personally go with a combination of the two.
Not to mention that your users could start doing their analisys with MsExcel against Olap cubes, without the need for expensive business intelligence tools (at least in a first phase). Stick to your guns
