The 10GB HDD IDE that came with the Presario has crashed/failed, so I went and purchased a Western Digital HDD 40GB(ata 100)IDE . The Compaq will not reconize the WD HDD, and only creates the RAMDRIVE on vitural C: 2MB. Since it doesn't reconize the HDD i can not Format or FDISK. However I have another PC (built) in which I have installed the same WD HDD that the Compaq wouldnt reconize to see if it would find it. And I had no problem finding it then FDISK then Format, and went ahead and installed Win2K prof on the WD HDD. So I tried as a last hope taking the WD HDD (currently with Win2000prof)and putting the WD HDD back into the Compaq PC hoping that it might find it, but yet still no luck. If anyone know what might be wrong, or maybe you know a Hard Drive that will work with the Compaq, then I might just exchange the HDD for another one (different Manufacture) p.s. I have tried the jumpers every possible way

Western Digital HDD w/ Compaq Presario 5100 series

you may have to into the bios and change some settings so the computer can recongnize the drive. for compaqs you need to press F10 when the computer boots up. set the primary master to "auto" if the bios supports this. also try autodetecting your harddrive in the bios, otherwise you may need to enter the hard drive info manually.
I agree with teknoguy totally on this one. Just a note, the contents of a HD do not affect the Bios ability to detect it. It could care less what was on it. You may even want to check for the latest bios version for your computer on the compaq site...
