I have just bought a secondhand pc,after cpu failure on my other,it's a amd1400 american trends motherboard sis730 i put my maxtor 40gig drive with operating system(xp) no problem but when i put 120gig wd caviar n it stops xp from booting up.i have tried numerous jumper configs to no avail, been to american megatrends site for bios upgrade but they seem to want to sell you it,and im not sure if it is a bios prob as 40 gig drive is ok,anyone have any ideas?

I had the exact same problem, what you need to do, is make sure the 120G drive is listed as the slave drive. Then go into the BIOS and setup the manual setting, should be with the documentation that came with the hard drive. Once you do that it should boot, make sure that the WD software that came with the HD is in the floppy drive and it will boot from it and then just follow the directions. This will allow XP to see and format the drive just fine. I have the 80G WD Caviar and it is working great now.
