I am a network guy and was called into a retail store to enable them to view their security cameras over the internet. They have a static DSL IP account.

After a few calls to Verizon, I got the 2200 working with a Linksys Router. The computers on the Linksys can access the internet, but I need to be able to get into the router from the outside world. I configured the Linksys to enable prot forwarding and all of that is fine. My problem is that I cannot even ping the 2200 from a remote site. I downloaded the owner's manual because I had a suspicion it is the firewall in the modem that is preventing me from getting in.

When I go into the modem's interface, I go into CONFIGURATION and their is nothing mentioned about a firewall, even though the manual clearly states that it is one of the options. If I cannot even ping this modem from the outside, the customer will never be able to use the remote viewing program to get in.

PS. Windows XP firewall or even the router have nothing to do with this. The 2200 is the gateway and everything is behind it. I should be able to ping it. Even Verizon is unable to ping it, yet it is working fine because the internet is easily accessed.

Any ideas???? I have no experience with this modem.

i think those modems had options to be routers if the ISP converted/bridged them..

check this out.. maybe it will help a bit.. but honestly, it doesnt make sense

pcnetgeek is on it - put the westell in bridge mode & forward ports (probably TCP 80) as appropriate on the Linksys.

(Or maybe the westell is already in bridge mode & that's why not all of the options are available. In which case, you only need to worry about the linksys)

Thanks for the replies and taking the time to read my post.

I had put the Westell into bridge mode. I called Verizon yesterday for more answers and they know absolutely nothing. The girl I spoke to told me to call Westell directly and told me to go to their site and enter the model #. The funny thing is that Westell's support page said they do not offer support for this modem and that I would have to call the ISP, which of course was Verizon.

Anyway, I was wondering why the Firewall option was not even an option because I had the modem in bridge mode.

Shouldnt I be able to ping the static IP address? This is my concern. If the modem is in bridge mode, why can I not ping it? I have already did the port forwarding entries in the Linksys. But if I cannot ping the modem's IP address, how will I ever be able to access the security system behind it?

its not there because it wasnt bridged by verizon, its still a _modem_ .. i had this happen with an effecient modem turn router by Epix DSL in PA.

I originally had the PPPOE modem, which was just a modem, then they started bridging some of the modems to router/modems... after seeing a neigboor with this, i called them and they issued me a new router/modem

But thats irrelavent =-)

You have a different problem which i cant see why you cant even ping the address. make sure that 'answer' to wan/ping requests in the router config is yes/enabled/? have another router to test with for rule-out?
