Upon install Of Westell 2100 moderm (ethernet) connection I cannot use the audio portion on my MSN Messenger program. Get the usual run around from DSL provider (BELL SOUTH) & MSN. "IT's their problem" , OuR systems are not faulty"! Not being a tech guru I hope one of you Tek-Tip gurus can help me out. I am on Window 98se OS. When I ran the windows hardware check it detected the new modem but somehow when this modem was loaded my P.C still does not detect this modem in my windows hardware. The modem is working and I can log into internet with NO problem. I suspect that since windows on my P/C has not dected this WESTELL 2100 modem I am having my troubles using the audio on Messenger. Windows list of devises has no Westell modems on it. Can I use the install disc AGAIN to see if this will load the drivers for this modem. I can locate my Westel modem in my c"drive folder but when I click this in on the box to get file from I get prompt that this file does NoT contain the file needed. Can anyone set me on the "right track"??? Thanks in advance

As it is an external modem it would not be detected. The modem also does not need any drivers, per se. The following from the Broadbandreports.com BellSouth Forum FAQ should explain the details:

Configuring the Westell:

Now that you have a general idea of how configuration works, check your firmware. It might require an update:
You should be familiar with how to forward ports in the modem interface:
Now you can follow the instructions in the last post in this thread to configure Messenger to work with your modem:

I would add that you should:

1. Make certain you have the newest Messenger client version;

2. Make certain you version of Directx is the latest version, Version 9.0b.

Thanks bcastner! I believe you hit ALL BASES with your fix for the Westell Modem. Sad comment that Bell South Tech's won't give you any help when they know this Westell Moderm will not run ALL programs until this configuation is done. Now I have but one more bridge to cross , that being McAfee Clinic . I no longer can use the ONLINE uninstaller,first aid and oilchange. I download for all these McAfee Clinic programs hang up and will not load. Yes I contacted Mc's tech support and got several "FIXES" which unfortunately do not work as I think the problem is more with this DSL modem connection (as it was with MSN Messenger) and unfortunately the options listed on the Bell South program did not include McAfee. Any more "MAGIC" left up your sleeve bcastner??? If not, I still THANK YOU DEEPLY for the help.

Thank you for your kind comments.

I unfortunately know nothing about McAfee. I would be surprised if it was a modem issue, however.

Perhaps the folks in the McAfee site on this Forum can help: forum38
