Well I hope womone out there can help. My new imac crashed last week. so i looked for help, [luckily I kept my Peecee] and I was advised that I could archive and install I had stated that I had upgraded to 10.2.2 but what I wasnt told was that I couldnt do and archive and ainstall after an upgrade .so today when i tried to install iSync I was told that I couldnt do it because I needed 10.2.2. So I found the install icon for it and tried to reinstall it. I just presumed that ws how to do it, like starting over from 10.2.1 which is what my system came with.

However I got a warning message with a ! over the Hdisk icon. saying that I couldnt do it.
So when i checked on Applecare support there was an article saying I had to do backup and celar my hard drve then do a clean reinstall of 10.2.1. from the CD.
But now I do not know what to do, Do Save all teh updated versions of virex and other programs or do I have to download them all again. I am on dial up so I only have 2 hours on line at a time so have to keep connecting so U can imagine what fun that all is. getting 10.2.2 the frst time was enough trouble. How ever I am rambling. But I would welcome any advice as to just what to back up. I have used idisk to back up some of my Appleworks files and mailboxes.

thanks

If you don't have a CD writer, is the mac the only computer you have access to? Perhaps it would be easier if you could network to another mac or pc and copy everything off. If you can do this (preferably getting everything onto CD-ROMs or something) then it will be safe to wipe the hard disk and do a clean install of the system.
Then, you can simply copy any applications back off the CDs onto your hard disk. When you launch an application, if it tells you it can't run because such and such is missing from wherever, you can locate and copy it from the back up CDs. This way, only application related files will be needed because you will have a completely new and fresh system on your Mac. This should help to eliminate a repeat of the crash you had earlier.
Also, interested to know what caused the Mac to crash? Was there any specific error messages or anything like that? Because obviously you need to cure the disease and not the symptom.

It is ok I have a new imac with dvd cd writer. so I can do the back ups it si just what I should choose rather than inability to be bale.
The reason it crashed is that I think I deleted something when I tried to trash unwanted apps that I got from a MACUser supplied CD. I almost wish theses mags would jsut supply the info and not CDs that look tempting but 'screw up' the system.
Thanks I will try to sort it out.

I don't think you can delete anything vital to the system if you are not logged in as the superuser (administrator).
I'm a little confused now.. you tried to install 10.2.2 a second time. But the installer did not run, or it did run and then screwed up? And what is the exact problem at this point, it won't boot up? ________
Remember, you're unique... just like everyone else.

Ok jasen, No I haven't any trouble booting upI tried to run the 10.2.2 again as my system seemed to say I didnt have it, I had done an archive and install so presume it hid the 10.2.2 somewhere. I found it in the library but I was not able to install it again as the MAC Hard disk icon had a ! over it and there was message saying that I could not do this.
i went to the Apple care support and found that I should never have tried an archive and install. If I had upgraded to 10.2.2 noeone tells U that until it is too late.
MY only main problem up to then was what exactly I should back up
So I am in the process of backing up everything that I dont think will be on the 10.2.1 CD so that I can do a complete clean reinstall. even to the point of old updates to Virex and enything else I have
I have done most of it but I am now having trouble. i managed to burn 2 CDs with back up items , Now I want to make sure I have all my photos as they are in albums on iPhoto but for some reason I cannot burn this other disc. I then tried using BAckup with my idisk facility but burning to CD. but I saw a message saying this will require 2 CDs but but it only added up to 649 mb and I have a 700 mb cd in ?
So I tried cancelling the back up and was going to start all over again on this bit but the cancel sign was on well over an hour. In fact it is now over 2 half hours and I disconnected in between trying to stop it. So now I dont know what to do.
Any Ideas?

Let there be light at the end of this tunnel please! :-( [cry][thumbsdown] [sadeyes]
