Weird problem with incoming lines and intercom

I have a client who says that over the years, when an incoming call rings, she would answer it, put it on hold, press an intercom button and page the person the call is for. So far, so good. Now she is saying that the phone won't let her do that. As long as another incoming line is ringing, she has to answer that line before she can use the intercom. So she ends up with two or three people on hold before she can start paging. I verified with her that she was, in fact, selecting the intercom button first before going off hook to prevent ringing line preference automatically connecting her to the next ringing and she says she is. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I don't think so. If nothing changes then nothing changes. If they didn't reprogram the ALS then I would guess it was always like that. She might have to press intercom before being able to page someone when a call is ringing but that is about all I could think of.

I wonder if the receptionist answers the first call, places it on hold, then hangs up the handset. If she then presses "speaker" it will answer the ringing line before she gets a chance to press the intercom button. That would explain her complaints. You almost have to watch what she is doing when handling calls.

She is pretty specific about hanging up, picking up the receiver, and then pressing an intercom button. I think sometimes she answers from a phone that has the ringers turned off, which would allow her to select without ringing line preference kicking in. I am also wondering if at some point in time she had her line selection set to intercom first and then it got changed. I haven't been there when it is busy enough to have 4 incoming calls to see it happen.

I guess you have to get lucky when it is busy or just call from a different phone and the cell phone to make it busy for her.

If there are only 4 lines, then all you would have to do is place 2 incoming calls from any other extensions. You automatically grab a line out to place a call.

But I would try resetting the system anyhow... maybe something is getting "stuck"?
