The weird problem is this.

I am using MS Office Professional 2003. (But I had the exact same problem when using MS Office XP Professional.)

I am also running Windows XP (with the most recent service packs, etc. No updates required).

It just seemed to happen out of nowhere. Everything had been fine up until today.

When I open any MDB file .. it opens fine.

But .. when I click on any table .. I get an error message:

Microsoft Office Access
(!) Unknown
OK

I can't fix it.

I can't get into any table.

I also ... CAN'T add a table to a new database.

When I try to .. the program craps out.

It then restarts and opens the database again, but now there is a table (or something) indicated that is called:

MSysCompactError

Access is just going crazy.

Can anyone help??? I don't know what to do.

I have tried compacting and fixing the database, but that does nothing.

:((( HELP???

Gary

I've had similar issues in Access 2000.

I hope you have a backup of your database, cos I never did manage to fix it....... :)

Well ...

The problem isn't ONE database .. it seems to be ACCESS itself. It is happening with every database I open .. even if I create a new one. Access just keeps crapping out. I have uninstalled it, reinstalled it, loaded a MS Office 2003 (since I had Office XP Pro before) .. and it is still happening.

:(

Any ideas?

Sludge hammer time...

Re-install Office / Access.

If this does not work, uninstall and then install as new.

I suspect if you use another desktop with the correct version of Access, you will be able to open the database.

I suspect a registry key or keys are messed.

By the way, did you add any plugins or install another version of Access on top of 2003?

Richard,

Been there and done that. hahaha

I often install and remove programs .. so .. this happens usually about 1 time a year. Not with Access, but other crap.

This is a first with Access.

But .. at this point, I have tried registry fix programs, reinstalling (after fully removing) .. even loading a new version of Access .. but still .. I get this "unknown" error message when ever I try to open a table in any mdb file. Really weird.

Anyhow .. I am going to re-format.

Thanks!

If I was in your shoes, yep, I would be re-installing Windows and then the apps.

The only thing worse than messed up registry entries in Office is Oracle 7.x, and missing support modules is not too tasty either.

You could try posting in the forum used for Microsoft Office.
