Weird Port Problem - Help Please

I bought a USB cable to connect my Nokia phone to my PC. I tried downloading drivers from the Internet as I couldn't find the drivers for my phone on the CD.

However, I installed the wrong drivers and two ports (COM3 and COM4) were assigned when I attempted to install the incorrect drivers. I have since found the correct drivers and have installed them (COM5). However, my Nokia software does not detect my phone when I connect it - even though the PC seems to.

When I check out my ports in Device manager I have COM1 - Communications Port, LPT1 - Printer and COM5 - USB Device. However, no mention of COM2, 3 or 4. I opened up the properties for COM5 and tried to reassign this to a different port. The system says that COM2, 3 and 4 and in use.

I am wondering is there some form of inner conflict and would like to free up the "in use" ports. Can anyone offer me any suggestions??

What does it say is using COM2, COM3 and COM4?


If it is a result of installing wrong drivers, maybe using System Restore to go back before installation will give you a fresh start. Or maybe you can just uninstall those drivers and software.

I have a nokia 5100, with infra red.
I had a similar problem with my connection, and after a lot of hair being pulled out, it turned out to be the software.

I was able to find an up to date copy online that worked after a bit of searching. Do a google for "nokia model## connection issue" and you should be able to find a phone-geek forum instead of a computer geek forum (no offence meant guys and gals)

Suggestion - once it finally starts working, don't bother syncing your calendar, it gets annoying thinking that your phone is ringing when it's just an appointment reminder.
