I am getting the folliwing very weird modprobe errors in my messages syslog, every hour or so (hostname of machine is "news") (I marked the relevant sections with ">", perhaps xntpd has something to do with this - the "kernel pll status change"):

Jul 31 12:11:32 news xntpd[1102]: synchronized to 143.160.132.45, stratum=2
Jul 31 12:11:32 news xntpd[1102]: synchronisation lost
Jul 31 12:15:49 news xntpd[1102]: synchronized to 143.160.132.45, stratum=2
Jul 31 12:16:53 news xntpd[1102]: synchronized to 196.31.211.55, stratum=1
>Jul 31 12:16:53 news xntpd[1102]: kernel pll status change 89
>Jul 31 12:19:03 news modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-3
>Jul 31 12:19:03 news modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-3
>Jul 31 12:19:03 news modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-22
>Jul 31 12:19:03 news modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module block-major-22
>Jul 31 12:19:04 news kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00 (floppy), sector
0

I also get these messages on the console:end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00 (floppy), sector 0

modprobe -c shows ide-probe on block-major-3 and block-major-22 (floppy is on block-major-2)

man modprobe does not show me anything helpful. Check your /etc/inet/ntp.conf to make sure no files are referenced on the floppy and also the command line that
starts ntp. Also make sure no file are linked to the floppy

Tony ... aka chgwhat
tony_b@technologist.com

When in doubt,,, Power out...

Initially I thought NTP caused these messages:
killing xntpd did not make the error messages disappear.

ntp.conf is itn /etc/ntp.conf - at least the version that ships with RH6.2, v3-5.93 (UnixWare has it in /etc/inet/ntp.conf). Are You using any nfs or other network file system ?
which could have a network or server degrade ?
Is there another application that may have io problems
ie: database update, database log file, or some other checkpoint?
What kind of disk setup do you have ?
Tony ... aka chgwhat
tony_b@technologist.com

When in doubt,,, Power out...
