Try adding another user and see what if it still happens under a different user.

Check your display driver, or update it.
Changing resolution and/or color depth may change it too.

Did you delete any font files?

I believe these iconic symbols are pulled from a font.

Hi, Bickyz,

The "buttons" for maximse, minimise, close and other signs on a window are the font "Marlett".

This page from MS's KB shold help:
"Description of and Troubleshooting the Marlett TrueType Font"

BigJohnD,

The link you gave,
was the basis of my orginal post. Marlett font I am guessing is not the answer. Now the question I posed earlier: I believe the buttons are font based, but there is zero documentation since Win9x (and Marlet) on the issue.

This is not a question where tons of Google'd results help. What is the basis of the symbols?

I am pushing the issue a bit with you because I think Win2k and latter OS is no longer TT font-based, but where it is pulled from is not clear.

It is like the perpetual issue in WinXP Forums, where is the iconic symbol for a Restart?

Hi, bcastner,

I, like you, was not able to find much on Marlett other than that page in the MS KB.

Marlett.ttf is a Win2K font, and can be easily viewed after finding it using Search. All the window glyphs are displayed; there are no letters or numbers.

I see Bickyz's problem as being that some customisation of windows has taken place. For example, shows a font called Marksman which can renamed as Marlett and copied over the original, and so change all the glyphs. It's also possible some font corruption has taken place.

Re-installng Marlett.ttf should sort it, either by finding it on the hard drive and replacing or expanding from the installing disk. The font can be extracted from Win2K installation CD - it's MARLETT.TT_ in the folder \i386. It has System attribute IIRC.

> Win2k and latter OS is no longer TT font-based,

I don't know about WinXP, I rarely use it, but I'm sufficiently familiar with Win2K that I'm not prepared to experiment!

What's your view?

BigJohnD,

I am as clueless as you. As I said, this is an undocumented area. My guess is that the iconic symbols are still pulled from a font for speed. Whether Marlett or some other, I cannot find a darn thing to clarify the issue after Win9x.

I still have a standing offer if someone can tell me the source of the "Restart" icon off the Start button under Windows XP. Every suggestion I have seen is a dead end. i suspect that the iconic symbols are in the Registry for Win2k and XP for the Common Dialogue boxes, and my elusive Restart icon.

If so, a Registry repair is in order for this thread question. That was the underlying basis for my question if they had deleted Font files recently.

Clueless still,
Bill Castner

Can it be due to virus...as i checked with norton av there wasnt any virus detected. Even in net when i check hotmail the check box to select emails has diff icons. All my icons are different n weird. When i clik on START then i get a menu where there are Programs, Documents, Settings, Search and so on. On the right hand side it should be arrow but in my compuer it has weird mouse icon with tails.....

Hi, Bickyz,

Either the font which has these glyphs or lines in your registery are screwed up.

Open up Character Map (Start -> Run, type in CHARMAP and click OK) and have a look at the font Marlett.

Check it's there.

charmap_marlett.gif

That's what you should see.

Bikyz,

Not a virus I have seen, but anything is possible.

Try re-registering some things. I will mark where to cut and paste to make a .cmd file to make it easier on you. Ignore any errors:

; begin cut and paste fixit1.cmd

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

; end cut/paste fixit1.cmd

2. As you mention webistes, please check your java install.

Here are a few ways to do so:
(both 1.0 and 1.1 and what's installed)

and you can test Javascript here:

and check whether you have the MS VM installed and which version here and whether it is working okay:

Its a problem wit MARLETT.TTF font...now how do i replace it. Ive downloaded and extracted this font frm windows 2000 cd and copied to desktop. Now i went to control panel then fonts then install new font and browsed to the desktop and i got MARLETT.TTF in the list of fonts box...i cliked in this font and cliked ok ...then i got a error message saying "The MARLETT.TTF font is currently being used and cannot be replaced. Wait until windows is finished and using the file , and then try again.""""
i get this message everytime...help needed.

Hi, Bickyz,

You'll not be able to replace Marlett.ttf while Windows is operating as it's in use in every window and menu. Marlett.ttf also has the file attribute hidden so it probably doesn't appear in the Windows Font Folder.

You'll need to replace Marlett.ttf from the DOS Prompt in "Safe Mode with DOS Prompt", that is by hitting F8 just as Win2K starts to load. This mode of Win2K can be very slow to load and exit.

But before you start/reboot, make a backup first with Backup (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> system Tools)

You need to log on with full administrator rights, and it helps if you are happy with DOS commands.

This is what you need to do.

CD \winnt\fonts
attrib -h marlett.ttf
ren marlett.ttf marlett.000
copy C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Desktop\marlett.ttf
attrib +h marlett.ttf
exit

I've not tried this, but I'm 99% confident - I'd like a second opinon though before recommending Bickyz proceeds.

Hello all,

I think BigJohnD proposed procedure is the good one. I can only add putting "" around the path\filename:
Code:
     copy "C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Desktop\marlett.ttf"
It is also very important to reset the hidden attribute as pointed out.

I tried the instructions of BigJohnD,..i went to "Safe Mode with DOS Prompt" then i went to c:\winnt\fonts and typed attrib -h marlett.ttf all i got was an error message saying "unable to change attribute c:\winnt\fonts\marlett.ttf" or i tried to rename the file again i got error message. I was logged on as administrator...Any help plz.

just as a guess. . .

can you not change the attribute to non hidden in windows proper, then boot into dos and follow the commands to replace the font file?

faxof

Bickyz,

Can you boot to command prompt? worst, even from boot disk. Safe mode uses system font---that seems logical.

regards - tsuji

My C drive is ntfs partition...by booting frm win98 bootdisk i cannot go to c drive. Is there any other way...I hav windows 2000 4 bootup disk aswell but i dun think we can go to dos prompt frm there.

NOTE: The Tahoma font is used in the dialog boxes and menus in Word and Office. If Word crashes when you start it, a possible cause may be a damaged Tahoma font. Follow the steps to remove and reinstall the Tahoma font.

After you determine or suspect that a font is damaged, follow these steps to remove and reinstall the font.

NOTE: This procedure removes the font from your system and requires you to reinstall the font from its original source.
Quit all Microsoft Office programs.
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

NOTE: In Windows XP, click Start and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Fonts.
Drag the font (or fonts) that you think may be damaged to your desktop (or to some other location outside the font folder). The font is now "removed" from your computer. In any document that is formatted with that font, another font will be substituted.

*********** end cite.

My reading of this is to: Open the Font applet from Control Panel, and drag Marlett as described for Tahoma.

Hi, Bill,

> Open the Font applet from Control Panel, and drag Marlett

Marlett is hidden and does not display in the Font applet.

The way to locate the file is via Search - but I suspect dragging it onto the desktop will screw up all the windows, scroll bars and so.

I'm not sufficiently confident to actually try it.

Hi, Bickyz

> error message saying "unable to change attribute c:\winnt\fonts\marlett.ttf"

> tried to rename the file again i got error message

These error messages are consistent with the file not being present. Run Search to check the file is actually present.
