Client has been using his XP system for 3 weeks with no problems. Today he came in and was unable to logon to the domain because the ps2 keyboard would not work (couldn't ctrl-alt-del). USB Mouse worked fine.

He tried a different keyboard and it wouldn't work either. He was able to use the keyboard to get into the BIOS, but once Windows loaded it stopped responding. But still, the mouse worked.

We tried safe mode with the same results. We tried a usb keyboard with the same results. We tried it in another box with the same results.

I tried to remote into his hard drive, but it wasn't found on the network. There may be some conflict going on between
the NIC and the keyboard, but wouldn't the usb keyboard have worked in that case?

It is the strangest thing I have encountered. Any ideas?

The PS/2 KB may be bad. See if another PS/2 KB works.

Can you get into Windows in Safe Mode? Check to see if Windows actually shows a keyboard is installed. Right click My Computer, then left click Manage. Double click Device Manager and check righthand column for Keyboards. Try a scan for new hardware. If you have a keyboard shown as being installed, double click on it for more options, including update driver.

Yes, we tried EVERYTHING; another ps2 kb didn't work. We tried safe mode, but it didn't work because we couldn't ctrl-alt-del to get in.

We are unable to access the drive when booting it. This is now out of my team's hands and has become a helpdesk issue. I assume they will have to boot from a disk and transfer his files to a new drive.
