Weird faint printing with LJ5

My LJ5 started printing faintly so I installed a new toner but without any improvement when using the printer normally e.g. from Word.

If I run the "Print self test" or "LJ5 demo" from the printer's control panel it's fine.

I also removed and reinstalled the driver and ran the "Windows XP Printer Test Page" and it came out OK but is still faint for normal printing even if Toner Density is set to 5.

I've fiddled with things like Half Toning, Ret & Graphics Mode in Control Panel but to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Bob

Might try a cold reset on the printer, holding down the Go button while powering on. I seem to remember the formatter PCA being the culprit last time I saw this. If the cold reset doesn't help it doesn't look good...

Badfrog,

Thanks for the reply. I tried the cold reset but it didn't help.

I think that it must be a software fault as I set the printer port back to Standard from ECP in the BIOS and printed from the old Borland Pascel IDE using ^KP and it came out at the proper density.

I've since tried it with the HP 4P driver and it's OK. I'll try reinstalling the LJ5 driver from the CD (if I can find it) and will report if there are still problems.

You shouldn't need the CD, XP has a working driver for the LJ5's built into it. I would just delete the printer, reboot and let pnp do its thing. The LJ4 driver should also work as well.

Thanks, all is well now.

All I can guess is that one of the registry settings for it got corrupted.

Glad you got it working. Thanks for posting back and letting us know.
