Sometimes, while surfing the internet, my internet will just stop working. It times out completely, and i cant even connect to google.com. When i reset the modem, my connection is fine for about two minutes, and then it dies again, unexpectantly. I am running a comcast modem, and my speeds right now are less than 300kbps download. I have packette loss all over the place, and i've had the technicians out here like ten times. I use my internet connection to play online games, and i need a fast connection. My only other option is to switch to verizon, but i'm not sure if they can provide enough speed to handle my game. Can anyone help me?

Ask your ISP to see if it's a dirty\noisy line, sometimes signal degradation\line dropping etc can occur because there is too much noise on the line, not something you can hear but certainly something that data doesn't like.

Also do you find that your line drops more when there has been heavy rain?

Have you tried using a different device to see if it's that that's causing the problems as well?

Have you done an upto date virus\trojan check, I am wondering whether you could be infected with a zombie of somesorts??

There are a number of things it could be, only when you have tried them all will you know for certain.

Yes i have had two modems, different brand. No, it doesn't just happen when it rains, it can but isn't soely attributed to that. It seems to happen when i have been online for an extended period of time, i.e. hours long. The signal is horrible, then, fotr the next few days, and i am right at this moent still having problems from 3 days ago when the signal first dropped out. I have had the techies out numerous times and tehy keep telling me it might be spyware or a virus, but i have troubleshooted both and i have none. What else can i do?

How can you be sure you do not have malware or a virus. I had a client machine a week ago on which I ran about 11 utilities, they all came up client, but some variant remained. Eventually I reinstalled, machine was fine afterwords.

Since you have packet losses, I suggest you download TCP Optimizer, adjust the router MTU, also if your router has a fragmented packet handling option, turn it on.

So what do i do? I reformatted not even 2 months ago, and i am very safe about my downloading. I have spybot and windows spyware beta, so what now? Ok, i got the TCP Optimizer, but i do not use a router so whats the point?

If your not running a software firewall, unlikely you do not have malware.

Use the TCP Optimizer, find out your present settings, document them, then run the MTU test, make the changes to your network adapter.

Run the pathping command before and after the changes

Comcast told me that they have a firewall running through their system automatically, and they told me to disable my windows firewall inorder to get the internet to work. I just did a latency test on the tcp optimizer, set the pings per url to 9, and the packet size to 1500, and i got 47% packet loss. What do i do, should i switch companies? I let the tcp do its job and set my options for me, but now what do i do?

47%, no wonder you have a problem, a few percent under 10% might be OK ( I get zero loss).

Adjust the MTU lower in TCP Optimizer, keep using the pathping command as you lower the MTU size to see if the packet losses decline. Lower it by 100 each time for the in initial settings, then refer to the links below. The lost packet probably are caused by a router the providers uses (black hole router),there are other causes for lost packets. Each MTU size change will require a reboot.

search google for mtu size ,and black hole router
