Weird CD-Rom Anomoly

My Creative 5233E CD-Rom is showing up in my device manager as working properly, but in "my computer" it has disappeared. I also have a CD-Writer external drive, and that is functional. The two have been working side by side for several years.

I just did a reformat and rebuild of my system, and it was working since then, since I used it to install software. My computer "shut itself off" three times yesterday. I'm wondering now if there was a short with the CD-Rom drive, though it seems very weird that it would still be showing up as functioning in the device manager.

Any ideas what's going on?

Are you able to try the drive in another system?
That would be my first avenue.
