I have installed Oracle EE 8i 1.7 and Designer 6i rel 3, in that order.

I have created a TNS_ADMIN key in HKLM-Software-Oracle pointing to C:\ORACLE\ORA81\NETWORK\ADMIN.

I have deleted the TNSNAMES.ORA, AND SQLNET.ORA so that there would be no conflicts from C:\ORACLE\DEV6i\NET80\ADMIN.

After that I am able to connect with SQLPLUSW with scott/tiger@ORCL. Just in case it didn´t work I have connected from the SQLPLUSW.exe located in:
C:\ORACLE\ORA81\BIN
C:\ORACLE\DEV6i\BIN
C:\ORACLE\des_817\BIN
In every case I was able to succesfully connect using scott/tiger@ORCL.

I have also installed Developer 6i rel3 and been able to log using the ORCL instance.

The problem arises when trying to launch DESIGNER. When I log using the same connection string the following error appears:

ORA-12203: TNS:unable to connect to destination
RME-00220: Failed to connect to Repository

The same messages appear when connecting to the Repository Administration Utility.

Please help.

Thanks.

p.d. I have also tried to create a database alias but it didn´t work either.

How many Oracle homes do you use? They are listed as HOME0, HOME1 ... under Oracle key. You should specify TNS_ADMIN under each of them or edit an appropriate tnsnames file.
You may also safely install Developer6i to the same location as Designer6i (not its 8i part).

I have 3 Oracle homes. 1st for 8.1.7, 2nd for Designer and Developer, and 3rd for I guess Repository or Import Export Utilities.

I have only placed the TNS_ADMIN under HKLM-Software-Oracle, but not on each of the homes. Do I have to place it in the main branch of each home ?

Thanks

Consider products in different homes as independant products. You may change settings only for products in specific home. So you have to set tns_admin, nls_language, local and other values for each home to affect products located in it.
