Thanks to your good advice, my website is now back on Google with good placement under my primary keyword. So, now how do I keep it there? I've been told that a website needs to be re-submitted every couple of months. Is this so, and if so, what is the best way to do that on a small budget?

No.

You'll find some old SEO sites advising that, and some SEO firms trying to make money by doing so, but it's not true now. I'm not convinced that it ever was.

Save your time and money for building content - that'll do your ranking much more good.

Thanks Chris. That's really good news. The SEO company that I used to pay to do this had me totally convinced. What a scam! Fortunately I fired them, but not before they had ripped me off for over a year.[mad]

There are many hundreds of free directories on the net which are useful backlinks, some also send traffic that are worth submitting to.

This is the only kind of submission that ever needs doing and paying for someone to write the submission details, descriptions etc can be a benefit. It only needs doing the once but can be extremly time consuming.

I'm just trying to put together all the ones I have bookmarked into some kind of coherent list (Over 500 currently. Free, Recip and paid ones ) plus there are thousands of links pages on sites in related areas that will accept submissions (not the FFAs btw)

So long, and thanks for all the fish.

Thanks Chris. I'm afraid I don't understand what "free directories which are useful backlinks" means. Do you mean those 'free submission' sites?

So it looks like paying the SEO company for the first submission was a good idea, but continuing to pay them to keep doing this every couple of months was probably not necessary. I don't see how so many companies can get away with this - and lots of them charging way more than the one I dealt with. There's even a company selling software that is supposed to make it possible to do this by-monthly submission thing yourself.

Will you be posting this list somewhere? It sounds like a great reference tool, but probably a big pain for you to compile.

It will go on my site when I get it up and running

Trouble with these submission "experts" is they never manage to submit where it counts, it's probably too complicated to write a decent entry for the site for most of them.

There is a list here. The ISEDB which can be a pain to work through, and another list here.
Make sure you keep a spreadsheet of each one as you submit so you don't try to hit the same one twice.

OK, now I see! Thanks much, Chris. I've been concentrating on linking with sites that I think would be of interest to my customers - like handspun yarn sites, patterns, fiber suppliers, and other fiber artists. I'm not sure if this is what got me back on Google or what. I'm also slowly replacing all my images with keyword relevant titles while reducing their loading time.

I also adding a couple more keywords, though I'm not showing up on Page One in Google under anything but the main one, which is handspun hats.

The SEO people copied my keywords over several times under various versions of "Meta Name" - including: keywords, description, D.C. subject, D.C. Description, etc. There's a long list. So when I change or add a keyword, I guess I have to duplicate that under all the other categories as well.

No don't bother, just remove the rest of those useless metas

remove

rating
ms.locale
category
classification
url
revisit-after
vw.96
any with DC
the waste of time keywords in comments

and all the rest below the comment except one of the content-type ones.

all that should be left is
content-type
keywords
description
and maybe the smarttags one even though it is redundant as MSSmart tags were killed off.

the rest are useless at best maybe damaging at worst

Wow, that's a surprise. Here I thought all that stuff needed to be there. Thanks! I'll take a look at it right now.
