webservice and database using netbeans java ee

is there any tutorial or can someone explain me how to retrieve a database through a webservice using netbeans java ee. About webservice tutorial I can only find the hello webservice retrieving a string, not some fields or query from a database behind it.

A webservice would typically transfer objects. For example a DTO that represent the data in your database.

... and have you got the 'webservice retrieving a string' example working? Would be good to know you've actually got a working webservice infrastructure in place before you progress to more complex services.

The retrieving a string example "Hello" is working fine. I am searching for retrieving fields in the database within the webservice.
