I have a user whose browser takes almost 1 minute to load any given webpage. When she first launches internet explorer, It will just sit there saying "connecting to <ip address>" I can even change her homepage to other websites and it will still hang. Eventually it will load. What could be the problem? She running Windows 2000 SP4 with IE 6 with all critical updates and patches.

probably spyware/malware. check these faq's in the virus/spyware forum:

faq760-4866

"If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get one million miles to the gallon, and explode once a year, killing everyone inside."

I do have spybot installed and have scanned the computer and removed all of the spyware that spybot has found.

That is a good first step. But not every program catches everything. See faq608-4650 as there is a specific method to this process.

The FAQs listed earlier by torturedmind are also excellent resources.

If doing all the steps listed in the FAQs mentioned seem a bit too much, give the trialware version of Giant Antispyware a spin. It is my antispyware of the month recommendation, and I liked it enough to buy it and install on my daughter's notebook which gets infected every five minutes it seems:
The subscription version of AdaWare SE is also an excellent choice.

I am having a weird problem. I bring up my browser, and go to the pages I need, but after 3 or 4 steps, it just won't load any new pages or links. The icon does not 'spin' and the links will not respond. If I right-click and indicate a new window, I will get a blank window with full URL address, but it I press the refresh button, the window remains blank and the URL in the address bar disappears.

This happens with Netscape 7.2, IE 6 and Firefox. I check my usage and find 63% resources are free (256M RAM). I have run Search & Destroy as well as Ad-Aware but there is no spy-ware on my machine. I also have Norton Antivirus, but no firewalls except VPN which is activated when I sign into work. I am accessing the internet via cable. The problem has grown from hardly noticeable to very noticeable.

Any ideas what I need to check next?
