You may have been wondering what happens if the user does not have Internet Explorer 4.0 installed on their computer. Can your application still work? The short answer to this question is no. The long answer is that if Internet Explorer is not installed on the system, all hope is not lost. By obtaining a license from Microsoft, you can redistribute Internet Explorer with your application.
Redistribution of Internet Explorer requires that your application setup program determine whether the proper version of Internet Explorer is currently installed on the target system. If version 4.0 is determined to not be present, your setup program can take advantage of the Internet Explorer 4.0 minimal installation package. This package will install the Internet Explorer 4.0 base browser, DirectShow™, and the Microsoft Win32 VM for Java. For more information on redistributing Internet Explorer 4.0 with your application see the Internet Client SDK, Internet Tools and Technologies, Licensing and Distribution.
-- HAS anyone acutally done this. sounds like a pain!
NOTE: Applications that only require Internet Explorer 3.0 functionality and work correctly in an Internet Explorer 3.0 environment can use the Axdist.exe and Wintdist.exe redistributables included with the ActiveX SDK. Applications that use either of these redistributable packages must verify that Internet Explorer 3.0x or higher does not exist on any install machines before installing either package. See the REFERENCES section below for links to relevant topics in the Internet Client SDK.
Use of AXDIST and WINTDIST is not recommended. The use of special DLL redistribution packages can be the cause of unanticipated future application compatibility problems and is therefore generally discouraged.
is it really necessary to redistribute IE or just put a add Shdocvw.dll to the package? I'm hearing conflicting opinions.
either way, i don't understand the line on the above page that says:
"The following command line will install the Internet Explorer 6 minimal installation package in quiet mode, suppressing prompts as files are extracted.
