I am running RHv3 and Apache 2.0.46. So my default webserver directory is /var/

At the same level is a nice directory with the cool default webalizer stuff in it at /var/
So, I am thinking, it would be nice to be able to browse to this page (/var/ so I can peep the usage. I also thought the best/cleanest/most proper way to do this would be to make a symbolic link of the usage directory and place it in the web directory (/var/
However, that gives me a permissions error (403 forbidden). This is mildly puzzling as the permissions for /var/ are set to 775.

Can someone please help me to clear up my mis-understanding and suggest a proper way to access the /var/ directory from the convienance of a browser?

The 'out of the box' configuration for RHES 3 Apache configuration already has an alias set for /usage/, so you should just neeed to access to view the webalizer generated file.

Humm - well, I guess I need to look into the standard config further, but I am running two systems/servers on 3 IP's (both running RHE3 Apache with the out of the box config) and its not working on any of these addresses.

I am just going strait to their IP address though because I don't have a DNS set-up, but I wouldn't think that could possibly matter.

OK - so yeah - this should be in the httpd.conf right?

I just don't see it there. OK, but here is the strange thing - I only have the symbolic link on one of my two machines, but I am getting the forbidden error on both - so it seems the alias is working on the other - but the permissions are what is causing the problem.

Thing is - I have the permissions on the folder /usage/ and index.html both at 777.

So where have my permissions gone wrong? It must be an Apache config thing I need to work out.

That alias seems to be in /etc/httpd/conf.d/webalizer.conf

Do you actually have an index.html in the usage directory?

lol - yeah there's and index - but great thnx - turned out the alias was only allowing localhost which explains everything - so I got it working now thnx.

:)
