Hello,
I'm trying to set-up two linux/apache boxes behind a netgear rt314 router. My dsl connection is dhcp But I'm leasing two public ip's.
I've set my eth0 on box 1 with 172.1.x.x protocal static. Box 2 eth0 with 172.2.x.x protocal static.
I have configured port forwarding on 80 to ip 172.1.x.x
I can't seem to be able to ping either box from any of the other boxes on my lan. Any suggestions.

Hi,

Unless ping is filtered-out by the kernel or explicitly firewalled it may be as simple as the subnet mask.

You say you have used 172.1.x.x and 172.2.x.x. Ignoring CIDR and all that, you would need a mask of 255.0.0.0 on these machines and on the machines on the rest of your lan to communicate without routing being involved. If the mask were, say, 255.255.0.0 the 172.1.0.0 boxes could 'see' each other and the 172.2.0.0 boxes could also see each other but 172.1.x.x couldn't see 172.2.x.x and vice versa.

Otherwise, try :

echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all

and/or examine the firewall rules for 'icmp' related protocol filtering.

Rgds.

Hello,
Thanks for the response ifincham

I'm thinking the problem is the configuration on the RT314 router, I'm looking to do is to run my own DNS servers (ns1.mydomain.com, ns2.mydomain.com).

Does anyone know if it is possible to make these two ip addresses visible to the outside world from behind the rt314 router?
Someone told me I need to disable NAT. I would like to keep the two windows boxes using nat.
Just trying to figure out if it is possible with this router at all.
Is so, do you know what filter or rules need to be set..
Or any other solutions maybe insert a hub between my dsl modem and the router??....
